Paying More Than KSh 6,000 for SHA? Understand Your Options

Paying above KSh 6,000 a year for SHA? A few things worth considering before seeking premium reduction or appeal assistance.

What the KSh 6,000 figure means here

KSh 6,000 per year, equivalent to KSh 500 per month, is the target Cyber Kenya SHA Desk works toward when assisting with contribution concerns. It is not an official cap, a universal contribution or a promised result. Paying above it does not by itself establish that your assessment is wrong.

Establish what your amount represents

Before comparing figures, confirm whether the amount shown is a monthly contribution, an annual amount or another account figure. You may be able to view contribution details through the official AfyaYangu portal, the SHA app or *147#. Keep a dated record and ask the official channel to explain anything unclear.

Review the basis of the official assessment

Contributions are 2.75% of household income, subject to a KSh 300 monthly minimum. For salaried contributors, the basis is gross salary; for non-salaried households, income is assessed through the Means Testing Instrument. A calculation using your own income estimate can help you frame questions, but it does not replace the official assessment.

If household or income information looks wrong

Identify the particular information you believe is inaccurate and distinguish it from circumstances that have changed since assessment. Relevant means testing information includes housing, access to basic services, assets and household composition or size. Ask how to correct the record and whether the assessment also needs review; a correction doesn't guarantee a particular contribution.

Understand official review and appeal

The Regulations provide for periodic means testing reviews and allow a household whose circumstances have changed to seek review. Updating information, requesting review and making a formal appeal are not interchangeable, so confirm which process applies to your concern. The exact current submission procedure is not verified here.

Find the current official requirements

Check the current process through official SHA channels at sha.go.ke or afyayangu.go.ke, or at a Huduma Centre / SHA office. Ask where to submit, what information is required and whether any deadline applies before sharing documents. Keep copies of what you submit and any reply.

Read the Punguza Malipo guide before choosing assistance

Our Punguza Malipo ya SHA guide gives the broader picture on checking your contribution. Cyber Kenya SHA Desk is independent assistance operated by Cyber Kenya, not SHA or a government office, and paid support is optional. Any potential difference depends on the official assessment or review.
